International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 92

Full deep ruby to the rim. Superripe aromas remain just this side of surmaturite: black plum, black cherry, roast coffee, dark chocolate, menthol. (I might have picked this blind as ripe-year St. Julien.) Great lushness and depth on the palate; pliant, seamless and thoroughly ripe, but with strong supporting structure under the seductive flesh. Finishes with noble, broad tannins and great freshness; mint and licorice notes contribute to the impression of grip and snap. The crop level was 2.5 tons per acre, which Draper says was the highest ever at this estate, and the alcohol is 12.9%, on the high side for Monte Bello. Another outstanding vintage for this wine.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 120

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello exhibits an opaque purple color, as well as an elegant, black currant, mineral, and smoky oak-scented nose. The wine is medium to full-bodied, tannic, and in need of 10 years of cellaring. Not a blockbuster, this offering is more elegant and finesse-styled than usual. However, as with previous Monte Bellos, it will take a long time to come around, yet it will keep for 2-3 decades.

Ripe and compact, with rich black cherry, plum, chocolate and cedar notes, focused and long on the finish. Has tannin to lose. 6,338 cases made.

Deep reddish purple. Dark fruit and earth on the nose. Narrow on entry with fruit notes expanding mid-palate. Sharp, medium, slightly acidic finish with furry tannins. Not bad but wouldn't seek to buy again. 50+9+7+16+7=89

Wow, wow, wow. This is what cali cabs should aspire to be. Soft and pure. The austerity and complexity of a top bordeaux but with the soft, ripe (not sweet) fruit that cali can bring. Deep aroma's of truffles, chocolate, cigar that although intense, were not explosive or overpowering. It sat perfectly in my mouth coating my entire mouth in soft, silky lusciousness. On the finish it slowly melted away over a prolonged time. Wow.
