Saturated ruby. Pungent, roasted aromas of black raspberry, currant and maple syrup; distinct suggestions of surmaturite. Superb sweetness and roasted ripeness in the mouth. The tannins spread out to coat the entire palate, but ultimately come across as less supple and more rustic than those of the flagship Harlan Estate bottling. Still, this stains the palate with flavor.

Readers should not overlook the dense purple-colored 1997 Maiden, a creamy-textured, full-bodied, unctuously thick, rich wine. Jammy cassis, new oak, smoke, and espresso notes explode from this blockbuster. An amazing effort, it will drink well when released, and last for two decades.

A touch austere, with a trim, focused band of earthy, cedary currant, sage, dill and cherry flavors, gaining depth and turning elegant and supple. 700 cases made.
