Burghound Author: Allen Meadows Issue: Issue 29

Dense and richly fruited with copious black fruits trimmed in a deft touch of wood followed by round, intense, full-bodied flavors and fine persistence. This is not a great Chambertin by the lofty Rousseau standards but there is plenty of wine here, not to mention excellent richness and length. It is approaching peaking drinkability though it should hold here for at least a decade. Consistent notes.

Medium red. More reserved aromas of red cherry, coffee and woodsmoke. Tighter in the mouth and not especially expressive today; flavors of roasted plum, smoke and minerals. The only one of the Rousseau '97s that comes across as tough and dominated by its structure today. But how much fruit will remain when the tannins let up? Slightly dry notes of herbs and wood tannins on the finish.

Wine Advocate Author: Pierre Rovani Issue: 125

Rousseau's 1997 Chambertin is powerful. This Chambertin's dark berry scents lead to a tar, cinnamon, briar, blackberry, black raspberry, and assorted dried fruit flavored personality. It is thick, chewy, medium-to-full-bodied, and will certainly be the longest-lived 1997 from this property.

Popped and poured, drank over the following 4 hours. dusty ruby with slight browning at the rim. Beautiful, very complex nose of cool pinot fruits, with a touch of menthol. Great sauvage aromas as well. In the mouth, spicy pinot fruit but the finish is a bit clipped. picking nits though.
