Good deep red-ruby. Superripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, black pepper and woodsmoke. Very concentrated, fresh and delineated; a firmly shaped wine with lovely balance and restraint. Finishes spicy, peppery and quite long. Wears its 14.5% alcohol gracefully.

The 1997 The Steading, an Aussie-inspired Chateauneuf du Pape-like blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 20% Mourvedre, offers up complex notes of pain grille, coffee, black raspberries, cranberries, and kirsch. Intense in the mouth, with a creamy texture, full body, and low acidity, this is a hedonistic, lush, lusty wine to drink over the next 7-10 years.

While still drinkable if one is really desperate, this wine is best suited for use in cooking. Bought on release and perfectly stored (for too long obviously) since then. Sadly I've got two more bottles left in the cellar. Was a very good but not great wine about five years ago. The cork was in great shape and the fill level was high but perhaps this bottle was an anomaly (I doubt it).

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.
