International Wine Cellar | 90

Saturated ruby-red. Restrained aromas of currant, mocha, dark chocolate, licorice, loam and spicy oak. Lush and silky, with intense, somewhat austere currant, black cherry, shoe polish and licorice flavors. Not a large wine but stylish and solidly structured. Initially seemed a bit tough on the finish, with slightly tart acids combining with firm tannins, but softened nicely with aeration and seemed to grow longer on the aftertaste. The best wine to date from this producer.

The 1997 J. Daniel Cuvee is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot (1200 cases produced). The dense ruby/purple-colored 1997 boasts a lavishly pure nose of blackberries, cassis, minerals, licorice, chocolate, and toast. It is expansive, with the vintage's tell-tale richness, sweet tannin, and outstanding ripeness and concentration. The persistent finish lasts for nearly 40 seconds. This wine possesses an openness and sweetness that gives it the impression of being ready to drink, but I suspect much more will emerge with aging. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020. Kudos to John and Robin Lail for the efforts they have produced to date. The talented young Frenchman, Philippe Melka, is their winemaker.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Super tight when opened, but 45 minutes and the aromas started to unfurl. A good 2 hours and the palate came around. 64% Cabernet, 36% Merlot from Howell Mountain this has held nicely, tannins have shed very little. Color: Dark core with crimson to slightly brick/rose edges. Nose: Notes of of black cherry, cassis, roast beef, chocolate, herbal and crushed fall leaves appear Palate: Full bodied, good fruit still remains with the black cherry and cassis see-sawing on the palate, savory roast beef and soy sauce, lush chocolate, some good herbal notes, just so slight to add complexity but not overwhelm. The tannins are very apparent but work well with the wine size. Bravo to the folks at Lail, though this blended style changed to 100% Cabernet in the 02 or 03 vintage, this wine has held up remarkable well. This was purchased directly from Robin Lail's cellar, we drank a vertical of 1997 to 2004.

About This Producer


Founded by John and Robin Lail and made by Philippe Melka, the Lail winery has for years specialized in producing the John Daniel Cuvee. This wine is sourced from Robin's vineyard, named for her father, who was the general manager of Inglenook in the 1940s, and was the great nephew of Gustave Niebaum, Inglenook's 19th century founder. A recent addition to the lineup has been a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sauvignon Blanc under the Blueprint label, recognizing John's architecture business.
