Medium red. Cherry, roasted herbs, earth, licorice and an almost exotically sweet note of marzipan on the nose. Supple in the mouth, with notes of pepper and woodsmoke. Seems fresher than the '97 Vieux Télégraphe, but this is not at all dominated by its acids. Finishes with very good length, and tongue-coating but supple tannins.

The 1996 Chateauneuf du Pape is an evolved, forward, richly fruity wine with medium body, and plenty of smoke, pepper, Allspice, black cherry and Provencal herb aromas. It is seductive, round, charming, and sexy. The wine possesses depth, is full-bodied, and with ripe fruit concentration. This wine will not make old bones, but it will offer delicious drinking for 6-7 years.
