Good full bright ruby. Wild, superripe aromas of cassis, plum, cocoa, soy sauce, leather, roasted game and plum sauce, all lifted by a floral note. Lush, thick and dense, but the currant, black cherry and menthol flavors are still austere. The slight green note repeats on the long finish, which features faintly gritty tannins. In an awkward stage today, but has all the elements to make a superb bottle.

The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 9% Petit Verdot that reached 13.4% alcohol) represents a severe selection of only 40% of the vineyard's crop. A blockbuster, powerful, concentrated Monte Bello, it possesses an opaque purple color, plenty of spicy oak in the nose (100% American oak has always been used for aging Monte Bello), and a deep, layered, concentrated style. There is plenty of tannin, but it is sweeter than that found in the 1997, and the wine is more concentrated and extracted. There is a touch of oak in the flavors, which are otherwise dominated by minerals and jammy black fruits. This is a terrific Monte Bello that will have 30+ years of life.

Ruby in color with pinkish highlights. Luscious nose of blackberries, black cherry, ginger, leather, and tar. Soft on the palate, though still expressing front to mid-palate tannins, this wine has mellowed with age but is a wonderfully elegant expression of California claret - so completely different from the often over-extracted wines celebrated today. History in a bottle.

Same type of flavor profile as the 1995. However, softer, rounder tannins and more integrated overall. More of a softer, supple mouthfeel. Dark berry fruit showing nicely with a very pleasant finish. Delicious, mature Bordeaux blend.

Mouth feel are silky with great minerality. What bothered me personally was a bit of excess oak on ther noise, however, guest liked it. Other than that, I think this is wine is in great balance in terms of acidity, tanin and fruit. I agree that '96 is drinking very well. I probably should not have blamed the aroma/flavor/tanin as oak. I remember when I was at 2009 Monte Bello component tasting, I tasted the same aroma/flavor/tanin in their Merlot. I asked the guy whether that is due to oak,he said the wine was in oak for a very short time, it should be its natural tanin. So I think I should probably attribute that quality as the signature Merlot profile in Monte Bello. It is there in many vintages and I often blamed it on American oak.

Excellent Cab right in its prime. Lots of fruit with minerals and oak.
