Wine Spectator Author: James Laube

Attractive creamy, toasty oak up-front, with supple currant and black cherry folding in beneath. Though it remains complex on the finish, it comes up shy in depth and added dimensions compared with previous vintages. Grapes are from the sources normally used for the Special Selection, which was not made in '96. 26,000 cases made.

Verticle tasting included 1996, 2002 and 2005 Napa Cab's. What is evident is the consistency and quality of Caymus wines. All were dringing well. The 1996 was slightly brown around the edge, the body was significantly lighter BUT the fruit in the bottle was good, the wine was soft and more approachable than the other two. The 1996 continued to get better as it was exposed. My first taste was 20 minutes after the bottle was open, my last was about 90 mintues afterwards. The 2002 had a similar taste profile and was very good after 20 minutes and had gotten better, it appeared to be the best of the three but after 90 minutes the 2005 was getting really close. The 2002 is at its peak the 2005 will get better from now through 2011. The 2002 was dark but the 2005 was inky dark with a little red on the edge. Both had some tanins (2005 significantly more)and were delicious.
