Saturated dark ruby. Extravagant, exotic aromas of crystallized dark berries, kirsch, violet, minerals, toffee and sexy, smoky oak; complex and compelling. Impossibly intense and concentrated in the mouth, but harmonious from the outset. Utterly explosive wine. Noble tannins spread over the entire palate.

The opaque purple-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a spectacular, exotic bouquet of Peking duck skins, blackberry and cassis liqueur, roasted herbs, and burning charcoal. It is phenomenally intense, with record levels of dry extract and glycerin. This hedonistic blockbuster is crammed with jammy fruits nicely buttressed and framed by adequate acidity and tannin. Drink this marvelous Cabernet Sauvignon now or cellar it for two decades. This is mind-boggling stuff! The wine from this hillside vineyard near Napa's Pritchard Hill, has already become mythical (1992 was the debut vintage). This is a wine of world-class quality, and is certainly as complete and potentially complex as any first-growth Bordeaux. To date, it has been characterized by extraordinary richness, complexity, and harmony, as well as the potential to evolve and improve for 20 or more years.

Aromas of creamy oak, mocha and hazelnut are intense and supple on the palate, joining a mix of currant, black cherry and plummy Cabernet fruit. Deftly balanced, this is aging nicely, with a long, persistent finish. The best of three bottles tasted.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective.

About This Producer


Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don and Barbara Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Helen Keplinger with Michelle Edwards consulting.
