Deep ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, maple syrup, game, cedar and wintermint; initially rather high-pitched but showed a stronger '96-typical torrefaction aspect with aeration. Very deep and layered, but with none of the easy sweetness that characterizes so much Napa cabernet. A rather Old World style of cabernet, with slightly sauvage flavors of dark berries, leather and blood. Finishes subtle, spicy and very long, with substantial but rather suave tannins. Structured to reward time in bottle.

The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch reveals a blueberry/blackberry, creme de cassis character with smoky oak, new saddle leather, licorice, dried herbs, and mineral scents. Expansive, with terrific intensity, purity, and overall symmetry, it has noticeable tannin in the finish.

Read other reviews for detailed descriptives but this is indeed a fantastic example of Napa. Great nose, silky smooth on the palate. Nothing is overly done but seamless and polished. As Bordeaux like as any Napa cab i've had. Slightly subdued finish may be my only criticism. You can accumulate this and drink for many years ahead. 50+9+9+19+9=9
