International Wine Cellar | 94

Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of smoky black cherry, black olive, minerals, cedar and game; I was reminded of a Montecristo No. 2. This really presents the full range of young Montrose aromas. Dense, sweet and layered; really reverberates on the palate. Very ripe on the aftertaste; subtle, complex flavors go on and on. The tannins are in perfect harmony.

Mid quite youthful-looking ruby. Very developed bouquet that is super correct and pleasing to a classical claret lover. Lovely integrated fruit freshness, vitality. The tannins are dissipated but this is a really nice, fresh wine for now. Not super succulent but very successful. Sucky stony finish.

This was a very strong year for the Medoc, as opposed to Graves and the Right Bank. The vintage has a very irregular reputation, but not so much for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in the Medoc. Harvest occurred September 23 and finished October 6, a relatively short period, even at a large estate such as Montrose. The wine has sweeter tannins than the 1995, but doesn't have quite the ripeness noticeable in 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010. This wine is the classic, or more traditional style of Montrose, with dusty loamy soil notes intermixed with blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Licorice, underbrush and floral notes were all present in this wine, which has good acidity and is not far from entering its plateau of full maturity. This was a year where Montrose used a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend - 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

A classic St.-Estephe with all the exotic character you expect from this appellation, along with a harmony, finesse and subtlety not seen in many '96s. Absolutely wonderful aromas of blackberries, anise seed, minerals and spices. Full-bodied, with layers of well-integrated, polished tannins and an intense spicy, fruity aftertaste. One of the best of the modern-day wines from Montrose. 17,600 cases made.

Consumed over two nights. On day one, the wine was not open for business at all but I could tell that there were lead pencil, cassis, and cedar notes locked in there. On day two, the wine took on more of a molasses character, with the above components starting to show but still not all the way. Bottom line, this bottle was sleeping and didn't want to wake.

This is a powerhouse. Nose a little bit more developed than taste. It is still very young, has a lot of tannins and acidity. Bouquet is very complex with black currents and licorice in balance. I would lay it down for at least 5-10 years.

Located in the heart of the Saint-Estephe appellation, Second Growth classified Chateau Montrose has been in the hands of the Charmoule family for over 100 years. The family has continued to follow age-old winemaking traditions of the Medoc with spectacular results. The vineyards also benefit from the mild microclimate created by the nearby Gironde estuary, which helps temper the climate, ensuring the grapes ripen under ideal conditions. Considered one of the top Saint-Estephe producers, Chateau Montrose is prized for its classic Claret style wines, big fruit and full structure. The wines are also known for their incredibly tannic nature, allowing them to stand up to years of aging. Chateau Montrose makes a second wine called La Dame de Montrose.
