Full ruby-red. Bordeaux-like aromas of roasted plum, currant, smoke and tobacco. Lush, pliant and expressive; doesn't possess quite the grip, structure or length of the '97 but this is smooth and captivating. Finishes with fine tannins and very good length.

The 1996 Cardinale is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, of which 62% came from Napa and 38% from Sonoma. Just under 3,000 cases were produced. It is also a top rank wine, and a star of the vintage. A saturated purple color is followed by licorice, cedar, fruit cake, and black currant aromas. Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, with low acidity but high tannin, this young, muscular classic should have fabulous aging potential.

Deep ruby red, nose of cedar and red currents, big berries, with big tannins and a long finish. Decanted for 3 hours before drinking.

About This Producer


Cardinale Estate (currently owned by Kendall-Jackson) is located in Napa Valley's Oakville district. Its signature red is a Cabernet blend made from low-yielding vines situated in the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges. Cardinale sources grapes from Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain, Veeder Peak Vineyard, and To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. The vines are green harvested, after which grapes are hand-sorted and pressed in traditional basket presses. The aging is done in 100% new French barrels. Since 2001 Christopher Carpenter has been the wine maker.
