Burghound Issue: Issue 9

A surprising amount of secondary aromas with slightly green, stemmy notes lead to intense, almost aggressive, nicely focused flavors and a long, persistent finish that displays a hint of bitterness and a bit of acidity poking through. There is good material here but this is pretty awkward at the moment and in need of 5 to 8 years to really round out. 88/2008-14 Note: this bottle had little in common with several bottles drunk in 1999 and 2000 as they were far better balanced and offered both better density and mid-palate depth, rating

Bright red-ruby. Incredible nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, fraise des bois, gingerbread, mocha, soy sauce, cocoa powder, iris and sealing wax. Like liquid silk on entry, with extraordinary sweetness, but extremely vibrant and youthful. Then toughens up in the middle palate. Like the Chapelle, this has been concentrated by a rather substantial saignee, but this does not have quite the early balance of that wine. Very backward but explosively long on the finish, with firm tannins covering the entire mouth. Should be very long-lived, and among the wines of the vintage.

This wine was extroverted and boastful when I encountered it. This magnificent offering has a saturated black/ruby color and an enthralling nose of candied cherries, roses, blackberries, stones, earth, and toasty oak. It is full-bodied, velvety-textured, and unbelievably dense yet superbly focused. Fresh and lively layers of red cherries, clay, currants, and Asian spices can be found in this powerful, intense, classy, and persistent wine. It should hit its peak around 2006 and be cellared through 2014. Wow!

Simply fantastic. As thick, silky and round as they come in '96, this is a mouthful of wine that's fruit- and terroir-driven, full-bodied, ripe yet elegant. Has firm texture, plenty of black fruit flavors and a deftly smoked, toasted oak character that keeps pumping out its sweet wood, grilled meat complexity. The finish just won't stop. A monumental effort for the vintage.

This offered everything one could hope for in a burgundy. It showed a humus (mushroom) quality and was full and fruity on the palate with a long finish. But, I must admit the fruit was beginning to taste faded and tired, but that might have been due to this bottle's provenance. The major take-away for me is that this wine drinks like a classic burgundy from a strong vintage, and must have been fantastic in its youth. That said, I would like to try another bottle from this producer or from another. While it didn't quite live up to its stellar reviews in Wine Spectator (96 points), Wine Advocate (93 points) and CellarTracker, it was certainly an enjoyable quaff and full of character and soul. A grand old beauty.

Wow! This is a deep, powerful, compressed (versus concentrated as I wouldn't want someone to make a new world comparison to it).... Strong mid-palate attack followed by full mouth filling attack.... Clear, clean, pure wine with still dark hues....... Nuanced dark fruit, earthy, smoky, mushroom nose... Balanced acidity and sufficient tannins make this drinkable today but I would think this wine has another decade.... Very long finish that was a consistently fading passing of the core nose and palate sensations.... This wine is earthier and coarser than other cdb's I have had...
