Fresh cherry-red. Enticing aromas of strawberry, sandalwood and graphite. Juicy, bright red fruit and spice flavors offer good delineation and balance for this hot vintage. Supple but by no means too sweet. Nicely integrated acids and tannins. Not at all forced or overextracted.

Rochioli's Pinot Noirs are at the top of the qualitative pyramid for this varietal in California, competing favorably with the Pinot Noirs made by Marcassin, Martinelli, and Kistler. The 1996 Pinot Noir Estate exhibits a sweet, smoky, black plum and cherry-scented nose, medium body, excellent ripeness and purity of fruit, enough acidity for definition, and a moderately long, easy-going finish with toasty new oak notes.

About This Producer

With three generations of dedication to the land, Rochioli Vineyards and Winery has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County's finest. This family legacy began in 1938, when Joe Rochioli Sr. purchased land he had long farmed. He had the foresight to know that the soil of the Russian River Valley would one day produce some of the world's greatest wines. His son Joe Jr. embraced this vision and today craft renowned, terrior-driven wines built on a foundation of superb fruit.

The result has been a decades-long tradition of outstanding vintages: Silky-smooth, fruit-forward Pinot Noirs; rich, opulent Chardonnays; and tangy, food-friendly Sauvignon Blancs.
