Saturated ruby. Very ripe, perfumed aromas of blackcurrant and chocolate; much deeper than the Napa Valley bottling. Dense, ripe and broad, but remarkably filled in and consistent for a wine from the '96 vintage. Shows an almost port-like chocolatey ripeness, but has enough supporting acidity to keep the flavors fresh and delineated. Finishes with seductively lush, suave tannins. Compelling wine.

The 1996 Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Vivid, intense aromas of new saddle leather, plums, black currants, underbrush, and licorice are followed by a full-bodied, sensationally concentrated wine with sweet tannin, a deep, exceptionally pure and concentrated mid-palate, and an opulently-textured finish. It was surprisingly open-knit and delicious when tasted in October, but there is more tannin lurking beneath the surface.

Bold, ripe and generous. Dark in color, this is very rich and concentrated without being heavy. The flavors are built around ripe blackberry, cherry, mineral and herbal sage notes. Ends with a complex aftertaste and firm but ripe tannins. Easily the best of three bottles.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective.

This wine will continue to age well. Powerful cassis and chocolate with a long finish. Tannins are starting to recede a little. The wine should be decanted for at least an hour before consuming.

About This Producer

From vineyards set 400 feet above the floor of Napa Valley, two critically-acclaimed powerhouse wines are crafted. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes just a touch of estate Cabernet Franc) and the Maya (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) showcase Oakville fruit in its most concentrated intensity. Production is limited to micro-quantities, making these wines sought-after prizes for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle bought their family estate in 1982, realizing their vision of producing world-class wine. The first vintages were 1986 for the Cabernet and 1988 for the Maya, which went on to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 1992 vintage. Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards and winery since her husband's death in 1995. French enologist Michel Rolland consults bi-annually on winemaking and blending decisions.
