If readers are not totally persuaded that Zinfandel is not a serious wine ... keep reading. The 1995 Zinfandel Moore "Earthquake" Vineyard (16.9% alcohol, from a vineyard planted in 1906) is an off-dry, mind-boggling Zinfandel with a deep ruby/garnet color, huge quantities of sweet, jammy fruit, plenty of pepper, earth, cinnamon, and spice in the nose, and formidable quantities of glycerin and extract. It is an amazing Zinfandel, and perhaps the only wine aside from the Grist Vineyard Zinfandel that is best drunk with cheese rather than table fare. Again, one of its amazing hallmarks is its purity and overall balance, with no hotness in spite of the extraordinary alcohol level. The 1995 Zinfandels are the products of extraordinary vineyards and genius winemaking - no doubt about it.

A sweet, late-harvest style, it's ripe and juicy, brimming with cherry, wild berry, plum and coffee notes and picking up a hint of caramel. The alcohol is way up there, 16.8 percent, and it has 1 percent residual sugar.
