International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 85

Full deep red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of black and red raspberry, currant, plum, graphite and spicy oak. Supple entry, then bright and sharply delineated thanks to firm acids. Fruit-driven flavors of currant, cherry and leather. Expands nicely on the aftertaste. Tannins are suaver than those of the '96.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 114

Christian Moueix and his talented winemaking team continue to rewrite the definition of a Napa Valley reference point wine. The 1995 Dominus (6,000 cases produced from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 4% Merlot) is a ripe, plummy, supple, expansively-flavored wine with copious quantities of black currant fruit. Full-bodied and low in acidity, it possesses exceptional concentration and purity. Qualitatively, it is built along the lines of the 1992 and 1990. While it is not as powerful or intense as the 1996 or 1994, the 1995 is a large-scaled, rich, concentrated wine that should provide splendid drinking for two decades.

I opened a magnum for my 60th birthday. I found this wine good but was somewhat disappointed as the fruit is fading and it seemed to lack complexity. A bit thin on the nose, and just not what I had hoped. I think winemaking techniques have improved exponentially over the past 15 years and prefer younger vintages from this producer.

A little past its peak but still delicious. Ripe red berry and red currant fruit framed but sandalwood and spices. Medium bodied with soft, rounded tannins. Pleasant, lingering finish.

Bordeaux-like, has lost a bit of it's fruit. Drink now

I don't see this getting any better with time.

Opened and double-decanted 4 hours prior to drinking. Colour dar ruby red fading almost imperceptibly to garnet at the rim. Initial aromas of cedar, spice and mocha developed considerably between opening and pouring, with a huge, intense bouquet promising more on the palate, which didn't disappoint. Up front punch of black cherry and chocolate with subtle earth/woody notes characterised the palate, with extraordinary length and srill persistent and very fine tannins. Lingering tastes of pipe tobacco and mocha were a real treat. There's life in this yet - probably at its best over the next 5-10 years.
