Reticent nose combines currant, nuts, and shoe polish. More tightly wrapped than the Armailhac, but also larger and more powerfully structured. Seems a bit more rustic than the '96 Clerc-Milon. Finishes with very good length and tongue-coating tannins.

The 1995 Clerc-Milon, a 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc blend, reveals more tannin and grip than the 1996 (ironically, the 1995 has more of a 1996 vintage character, and vice versa for the 1996). This attractive dark ruby/purple-colored wine has impressive credentials, and may merit an outstanding score with another year or two in the bottle. It offers a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, meats, cedar, cassis, spice, and vanillin. This dense, medium to full-bodied wine possesses outstanding levels of extract, plenty of glycerin, and a plush, layered, hedonistic finish. A luscious, complex wine, it reveals enough tannin and depth to warrant 15 or more years of cellaring. A sleeper.

Like smelling a delicious raspberry sauce with hints of coffee and smoke, and the wine that follows is wonderfully structured, muscular and well toned. Full-bodied, with sleek and racy tannins and a long, characterful aftertaste. One of the top buys of the vintage.

I generally prefer young wines, finding that most reds do not age that well. Bordeauxs and this one in particular are the exception. Great nose of blackberries, currants & spices. Medium to full bodied, but the spices really come through on the palate and the finish. Still has good fruit and is very nuanced. Tannins have calmed but still let you know they are there.

Clear deep ruby in color with medium red rim variation and some sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Clean bouquet of cassis, cigar box and oak. Palate is yet a bit closed with underlying black currant and hints of graphite. This is hugely tannic and remains awkwardly backward even today. With 4-5 hours of air it opened a bit more to reveal slightly more dark fruit. Potential is there, but I don't know if it can overcome its structural backbone...could be classic Bordeaux in its dormant phase
