Big, rich, intense and robust aromas explode from the glass and lead to intense, full-bodied, and impressively scaled and dense flavors all wrapped in a wonderfully velvet finish. To be sure, this is no where near ready nor is it a cuddly wine as the structure and power suggest that this will very much take its sweet time coming around. That said, there is so much underlying material that I suspect it could surpass the incredible '96. This will evolve slowly and over many years.

Similar red-ruby color. Black cherry, licorice and caramel on the nose, plus an almost medicinal hint of iodine. Very closed in the mouth, and completely different in shape from the Clos de Beze. Intensely flavored and very long, with harder tannins and a peppery quality. This stubbornly backward wine appears to need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging, and should ultimately merit a considerably higher score. But the '96 may be better.

Deep colour - still looks very vibrant dark ruby with some paleness at the rim. Candy and meatiness on the nose. Jewelly. Very sweet and rich and explosive on the palate. A hint of strawberry jujubes but lots of pleasure and some very polished tannins. Lively and rich and flirtatious. Overall very polished and complex.

Displaying a bright, dark color and huge aromas of Pinot fruit, smoky oak and rocks, the Chambertin has a massive, deeply spicy, sweet, very thick, super-complex palate with sauteed bacon notes. Tannic, extremely tight and stunning, this backward wine will reach its peak between 2007-2020.

What a sexy and exotic red Burgundy. Backward and unforgiving now, this wine is nonetheless packed with dense, ripe black cherry, plum and well-integrated oak flavors that fan out on the long finish. Very powerful, very intense, very masculine, it will be drinkable from 2000. 483 cases made.
