Deep ruby-red. Bright, enticing aromas of redcurrant, minerals and tobacco; not quite as ripe as the '96. Lovely sweetness and clarity of flavor in the mouth. More supple than the '96, and likely to be approachable much earlier. Finishes with substantial, tongue-coating tannins.

Dark crimson. Strong lead-pencils nose. Then racy and polished and very flattering with well-managed tannins. Stands out among the 1995 St-Juliens for its sophistication – with concentration.

While not as backward as the 1996, the opaque purple-colored 1995 is a tannic, unevolved, dense, concentrated wine that will require 8-10 years of cellaring. The 1995 exhibits pain grille, blackcurrant, mineral, and subtle tobacco in its complex yet youthful aromatics. Powerful, dense, concentrated cassis and blueberry flavors might be marginally softer than in the 1996, but there is still plenty of grip and structure to this big wine.

Black licorice and currants on the nose. Very fragrant. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Still needs time to come together.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective.

stuartjakub.googlepages.com Deep smoke and tobacco with rich fruit that expanded robustly on the palate. Tannins were not existent. It was all fruit and disappointing.

About This Producer

Classified as a Second Growth estate, Château Léoville Poyferré is a rising star in Bordeaux, well-known for its aromatic and velvety wines. In recent years, the style has leaned toward a more complex and rich nature, and the estate has been receiving increasingly positive reviews. The vineyards are planted to a majority Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc comprising the remainder. The Saint-Julien property has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1921, and Didier Cuvelier has been in charge of the estate since 1979. Much of the chateau's recent praise is due to Cuvelier, with the advice of consultant Michel Rolland, who has implemented many improvements to quality and style at Leoville Poyferre. In addition to its grand vin, the estate produces a second wine called Moulin Riche.
