($250) Light yellow. Rich and powerful, with leesy pear and white truffle aromas accented by gentle notes of white pepper and cinnamon. Extremely powerful Krug, with rich orchard fruit flavors, a velvety texture and warm, rich, inviting notes of brioche and creme brulee Finishes with intense pear and peach flavors and lingering notes of smoke, iodine and toffee. One of the most concentrated Champagnes I tried this year. (Moet Hennessy USA, New York, NY)

Pale straw.  Rather languid bead.  Firm, almost vegetal nose with judt a hint of lemon cream.  Dense and tight knit.  Uncompromisngly dry and still pretty tight.  Very long. It's all on the finish, like some great white burgundies. Wonderfully long.   But I would still ideally wait for this to unwind further.  It is slowly opening out from the tense state in which it was released...

The 1995 Vintage provides a fascinating contrast to the 1996. This is a tightly wound, sinewy Champagne loaded with brioche, toasted oak, lemon rind, flowers and minerals. The mousse is extremely fine and the style decidedly more linear and fresh than the 1996. Though deceptively medium-bodied in style, the wine appears to be built for extended cellaring.

I am allocating slightly fewer marks here than for example to the 90, to be sure, but a more classical Krug still feels positive after the monstruous giants of 89 and 90. The most striking thing about it is the razorsharp acid that guarantees an extremely long life. Probably the most long-lived of all the 95's in Champagne. At present the acid has the same efficacy as a fantastic breeze of bracing alpine air. The complexity and elegance are unmistakeable. Most strongly reminiscent of Bollinger's fabulous 95, but somewhat harder at the present stage.

A very youthful '95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. It's all underscored by a precise structure and creamy texture. Its structure keeps it persistent through the long finish. A picture of precision and intensity. 1,700 cases imported.

About This Producer

Krug Champagnes are famous for their rich, nutty, elegant and extremely food-friendly nature. Founded in 1843 by German immigrant Johann-Joseph Krug, the house has since been run by many generations of the Krug family, and the general style of the champagne has evolved along with that progression. Depending on the blend, a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier is used, and fermentation takes place in small French oak barriques. Aging can run anywhere from five to seven years on lees, and in the case of the Collection series, as much as fifteen to twenty years.

Krug's most prestigious wine is its vintage Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) from the grand cru vineyard site Clos du Mesnil.
