Red-ruby color, not quite as saturated as the '96. More roasted and less minerally than the '96: notes of black fruit, game, and toasty oak. Tightly wrapped and rather taut today, but offers terrific concentration and length. Today the wine tannins are very visible, and perhaps not quite as sweet as those of the '96, and firm acids are not yet in complete harmony with the wine. But this will be superb with six to eight years of bottle aging.

A wine of extraordinary intensity and accessibility, the 1995 Cos d'Estournel is a sexier, more hedonistic offering than the muscular, backward 1996. Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobs of black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and a boatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkable intensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by the wine's new oak. Because of low acidity and sweet tannin, the 1995 will be difficult to resist young, although it will age for 2-3 decades.

Spice rack of a wine, rather exotic. Concentrated aromas of tar, spices and currants. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, ripe fruit aftertaste.

Bummer. Did not get to try as dropped the bottle during a move. The nose was amazing however.

This  is a classic st.estephe nose, earth, slightly unripe fruit that shows a green note, apparent oak,  moss and pine needles but all of these produce a nose that is most attractive.  On the palate it's super dry, the acidity is upfront here and tames the tannin.  A mouthfull of red berry fruit and dried herbs peak through on the palate. This wine is great now and needs a few hours in a decanter but it's probably going to show better in about 5 years or so.

About This Producer

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Cos d'Estournel wines contain a large amount of Merlot (40%), one of the highest percentages in the region, in fact; this gives the wines their wonderful fleshy, chewy texture. The chateau itself is a very unusual pagoda style building which was built by the 19th century owner Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The building is featured on the bottle label, making it easy to spot in the Bordeaux section. The estate also produces a second wine called Les Pagodes de Cos.
