The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (approximately 500 cases produced) is an awesome wine that tastes like a synthesis in style of some of the richest, most powerful Cabernets from the Oakville district. It may come closest in style to resembling the profound Cabernets of Harlan Estate. This spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon is a worthy candidate for 20-30 years of cellaring. The opaque black/purple color is followed by intense aromatics offering smoke, coffee, roasted meats, and copious quantities of blackberry and cassis fruit. Extremely dense, full-bodied, and crammed with extract, this persuasively rich, authoritative Cabernet Sauvignon is among the most noteworthy wines of the 1995 vintage. While it can be drunk young, this wine begs for 5-6 years of cellaring. It will be a long distance runner, although I am not sure how many readers will be able to ignore its lavish display of decadent levels of ripe fruit and toasty oak.

Intense and concentrated, with a firm band of cedar, spice, earth, mineral and currant flavors. Tightens up on the finish, where the tannins fold in and the wine displays lots of finesse and complexity. Best to cellar into 2001 to 2002. 500 cases made.

About This Producer

The PlumpJack Winery's Estate Vineyard, founded in 1881, is nestled in the nape of the Vaca Mountain range on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. The main winery building, which is still in use, was completed in 1883. Vineyards have covered the Oakville site since the late 1800s.

In the more recent past, the facility where PlumpJack now makes its wine was the original home of Villa Mt. Eden Winery. Begun in 1973 by proprietors James and Anne McWilliams, the vineyard and winery rapidly gained attention for producing dynamic, long-lived wines, with particular emphasis on the estate and reserve Cabernet Sauvignons. Continuing in that tradition by producing the finest Cabernet Sauvignon is PlumpJack Winery's ultimate goal.
