International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 78

Bright dark ruby. Sweet, superripe aromas of raspberry, plum, black cherry, tobacco, toffee and game. Like liquid velvet in the mouth: sweet, voluptuous, seamless. Palate-staining flavors of black cherry, chocolate and smoky oak. Finishes with chewy, toothfurring tannins and great persistence.

A superb effort in this vintage, Angelus's opaque purple-colored 1995 is a massive, powerful, rich offering with plenty of ripe, sweet tannin. The wine's aromatics include scents of Provencal olives, jammy black cherries, blackberries, truffles, and toast. A very full-bodied wine, it is layered, thick, and pure. This is the most concentrated of the 1995 St.-Emilion premier grand crus.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

A stunning red. Dark and inky, with masses of coffee, blackberry, cherry and wild flower aromas. Full-bodied and tannic, with loads of fruit and tons of oak on the long, long finish. Perhaps a bit too much new wood on the finish?

Inital nose is barnyard, love it, but after an hour in decanter this wine opens to beautiful blackberry, cassis fruit with a hint of vanilla. Deep purple to the rim, very full bodied, this baby is just now starting to drink at its potential. Huge and concentrated but with very polished tannins and a long velvety finish. The acidity was very refreshing and paired beautifully with grilled lamb. PSome give this 95, but I think it is even a little better!
