($140; a library bottling, released in small quantities ten years after the vintage) Good ruby-red, with some development at the rim. Complex, mellow aromas of black raspberry, tree bark, smoke, cedar and nutty oak. Sweet, pliant flavors of blueberry, raspberry and nuts, complicated by subtle herbal nuances. Not especially expansive but complex and easy to drink. Finishes with dusty, slightly dry tannins that come across as less refined than those of the 2001. Togni, who ventured the opinion that this wine was not quite ready to drink, thought that he may have pressed the fruit a bit vigorously in 1994 following the end of the cuvaison

As is the practice at this winery, they hold back 50 or so cases of their finest vintages for release after a decade. The current release of their library selection is the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, a magnificent effort that, for me, is one of Togni's six or seven finest wines. Its deep plum/purple color reveals only a touch of lightening at the edge. A glorious perfume offers up aromas of plums, figs, creme de cassis, smoke, hickory spice, and high quality cigar tobacco. In a blind tasting, this California Cabernet could easily be mistaken for a great Pauillac given its structure, density, richness, and perfume. This 1994 is just beginning to move into its adolescence. Even though it has 20-25 years of life remaining, it is approachable. It is a monumental Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the valley's legacy producers.

Strikes a nice balance between toasty, buttery oak and ripe cherry and plum flavors. It's not as big or as intense as this wine can be, but it still packs in enough racy Cabernet flavor to hold your interest. Tannic, but balanced. 1,752 cases made.

Drinking well now, good fruit and medium finish. I like other top Napa cabs from this vintage better, but a good wine, still kicking.

About This Producer

This family-owned and run vineyard, founded in 1981, sits near the top of Napa Valley's Spring Mountain. Formerly a producer of Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, Togni Vineyards is now concentrated on its estate Margaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. This age-worthy blend reflects Togni's early wine education and influence as a student of Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux. With an annual production of only 2,000 cases, Togni wines are in limited supply and high demand. The estate grown and bottled Cabernet Sauvignon is a juicy combination of black cherry, currant, cassis, and licorice. In addition to the current release each vintage, Togni re-releases a 10-year-old bottling to showcase his wine's true aging potential. A second label, Tanbark Hill, is produced from younger vines on the estate property. Rounding out the portfolio, Togni also makes a sweet red known as Ca'Togni produced from Black Muscat.
