This hedonistic Cabernet Sauvignon's saturated purple color is accompanied by an exuberant, sweet, enveloping fragrance of smoky new oak, and jammy blackberry and cassis fruit. In the mouth, this lavishly wooded, black fruit-filled Cabernet is extremely full-bodied, with superb levels of fruit, glycerin, and extract. Like many 1994 Cabernet Sauvignons, it possesses extraordinary equilibrium, with the sweet tannin giving the wine considerable accessibility. The finish lasts for nearly 30 seconds. This will be a fun wine to drink young, but do not discount its aging ability as it should last for two decades.

Enormous complexity, depth and richness, with deeply concentrated blackberry, cherry, currant, anise and cedary dill and coconut scents, this is a powerful yet elegant young wine that is in peak drinking condition, finishing with a dash of herb and tobacco.--California Cabernet '74/'84/'94 retrospective. 1,000 cases made.

Deep purple with complex berry and flower nose. Elegant structure with perfect balance and complex delicious fruit. Elegant finish. Much younger than expected.

Happy New Year! This was wonderful wine. Very complex yet elegant, with a nose of black fruits, tobacco and herbs on a very long finish. Served with prime New York cut steaks, garlic spinach, baked potato and Cesar salad...the wine was the star of the meal. If you have this in you cellar you can drink now or hold.

About This Producer

Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by the Wagner family in Napa Valley's Rutherford district. The Wagners originally immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area from Alsace in the late 1880s. The winery produces both a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and since 1975, a Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, differentiated by superior fruit and additional barrel aging. The name, Caymus, has dual origins: it is both the name of a subgroup of Mishewal-Wappo Indians that lived near the present-day Yountville, and the name of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, given to George Yount in 1836, which eventually became the town of Rutherford. The winery maintains 60 acres of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as well as buys grapes from select Napa Valley growers. The Wagners' goal is to create a balanced wine that is approachable at release, but will improve with bottle age. Caymus takes great care in its vineyard maintenance, farming each block according to the specific needs of its soil type, climate, slope and orientation. The vines are also thinned in order to concentrate the flavor and structure within the grapes. Caymus also produces a white blend called Conundrum, and other small production varietal offerings.
