International Wine Cellar | 90(+?)

Ruby-red color. Very ripe aromas of roasted plum, red raspberry, maple syrup, smoke and scotch. Dense but bright and youthful. Flavors are still rather primary and high-pitched. Finishes rather tannic, but the tannins are smooth. This wine should undergo an interesting evolution in bottle-in contrast to some past vintages of this wine, which have not gained noticeably in complexity with bottle aging.

The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc) reveals toasty sweet oak in the nose, bombastic levels of black currant fruit and spice along with a hint of mint in the background. Supple and full-bodied, with delirious levels of cedar and unctuously-textured fruit, this fleshy, gorgeously made Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well for 14-15 years.

Probably a great bottle 5 years ago. Hung on to this one much too long (and he has several siblings in my cellar as well). Will use the next bottle for pot roast gravy.

About This Producer


Silver Oak was founded in the early 1970s by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, a former winemaker with Christian Brothers. The founders' goal was to create exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon that would be distinguished by its elegance and finesse. In most years, the wines are made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from the Alexander and Napa Valleys. The developing wine is aged 30 months in American Oak barrels and then cellared about 15 months before release. Silver Oak aims to make a velvety style Cabernet that is drinkable upon release. In addition to the well-known Alexander and Napa Valley Cabernets, Silver Oak has also produced North Coast and Bonny's Vineyard Cabernets in select vintages. After 30 years of partnership between Ray and Justin, the Duncan family is currently the sole owner of the property.
