Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker

The 1993 should be as prodigious as the 1992. It is an opaque purple-colored wine with spectacular ripeness, purity, and potential. Dense, full-bodied, with a chocolatey, toasty, mineral, and blackcurrant-scented nose, this wine has a rich, full-bodied, chewy texture nicely buttressed by ripe tannin. In addition, the wine reveals more noticeable tannin in the finish, particularly when it is compared to the 1992 or 1994. This is another 20-25 year wine.

1993 was considered a weak vintage in Napa primarily because '93 was sandwiched in between 1992 and 1994-7. This wine shows how a producer dedicated to the highest quality can triumph over difficulties less producers succumb to. The '93 drinks beautifully right now but shows no signs of slowing down. Powerful fruit in the nose and mouth coupled with attractive herbal nuances. Tannins are more prominent then in the best vintages of Harlan (the skins of the grapes were drier in '93 and produced more tannic wine.)
