Production: 17,000 cases; Alcohol: 14.1% Blend: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc; Harvest Dates: October 12 to November 11. A more mineral-dominated wine, the 1993 Private Reserve offers notes of cedarwood, black cherries, black currants, damp earth, underbrush and forest floor. It is the product of a lower than normal crop, some shatter during berry set and a general reduction of fruit by nearly 30% in some vineyards. August and September alternated between cool periods and large heat spikes. This was a challenging year, but the seemingly fully mature wine has turned out very well. Unlike 1992, 1991 and 1990, this vintage is best consumed over the next 5-7 years given its more fragile constitution.

Smooth entry, with polished currant, cherry and cranberry fruit, picking up cedar and anise flavors, though it turns dry and the tannins grip tightly on the finish.--1993 California Cabernet retrospective. 11,500 cases made.

From magnum. Dark purple-blue and almost opaque; very little browning at the edge. Scents of cedar, cassis, and masses of deep, sweet fruit just becoming secondary. Correct Napa cab richness and breadth. But a little heavier, clunkier and grainier in the mouth than one would hope - doesn't have the delineation, to say nothing of nobility or grandeur, of other early 90s vintages from this property (I've had better balanced PR from 1991, 1992, and 1994); comes off a bit like the 1990. More age won't hurt, but neither does it seem likely to help much.

Opened, decanted for one hour. Nose of leather and spice. taste of blueberries and other dark fruit. Very long finish. Opened up more with time in the glass.
