More Vintages and Sizes of Vieux-Telegraphe - Chateauneuf du Pape (La Crau):
Photo of actual year not available
Author: Robert Parker
The 1990 is somewhat loosely knit, and lacks the inner density found in top vintages. Fully mature, it reveals notes of dried herbs, tapenade, new saddle leather, licorice, iodine, and jammy black cherry fruit. Although the aromatics and attack are impressive, the finish is abrupt.

Thick, chewy and full-bodied, with juniper, cedar and dried currant flavors. A muscular and focused Rhône, with an intriguing flavor profile, but too tough to warm up to at this young age. Everything is in balance, though, so it's a good bet to cellar until at least 1997.

Ultimately complex wine. This one taught us just how important bottle age is to the great Ch d Papes. The nose continued to put forth novel flavors and characteristics with each sniff - matchbox, smoke, must, tobacco, thyme, cooked meat (I saw these integrate into something like 'burnt village' - oy). Stewed fruit showed itself in the palate along with the presence of musty bog. The tannins were supple and the acid/alcohol balance led to a long finish. Good wine, drink now or in a few.
