Similar aged, lightening ruby to the 1990 served alongside it with turbot. Big and sweet and round - seems fuller, richer and a bit older and dustier than the 1989 served alongside. Very long and powerful. Wonderfully rich and opulent. Sweet and perhaps a little bit simpler than the 1989 - though it would work better than the 1989 with richer food.

Although I have always rated the 1990 higher than the 1989, I was stunned by just how fabulous the wine was showing in my tasting in late 1996. It possesses an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a stunning nose of jammy blackcurrants, cedar, spice, and smoke. Full-bodied, with magnificent extract, excellent delineation, outstanding purity, and layers of intensity, this massive, dense, well-balanced Pauillac is the finest Grand-Puy-Lacoste since the 1982. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2015.

Still deep red color-elegant nose. Complex and layered with perfect balance and strong finish. Fades after 45 minutes.

Big nose of dark fruits and currants/cedar, a heavy hitter with a great mouthfeel and long finish. I don't understand the "83" in the Community Tasting Notes. I loved it. Plenty of time left.

About This Producer


Located on the left bank of the Gironde River, a few miles from the town of Pauillac, Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste (also known as Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste-Saint-Guirons) is a Fifth Growth classified Bordeaux wine that continually outperforms its classification. The vineyards cover over 90 hectares growing primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Grand-Puy-Lacoste's wines are powerful, with distinct tannic structure, and rich blackcurrant and cassis notes which are the hallmarks of a good Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon is king at Grand-Puy-Lacoste, as the deep gravel topsoil with a limestone base is ideally suited for growing the grape. Cabernet is also what gives the wines their wonderful structure, and aging potential. The estate's second wine is called Lacoste-Borie.
