Jancis Robinson Author: Jancis Robinson

Very similar hot, dry vintage conditions resulted in a much more classically styled wine with purer, more obvious fruit. Extremely polished and seductive and possibly the finest expression of modern Montrose for current drinking. Classic, mineral-endowed undertow.

Bordeaux Book(1998) Author: Robert Parker

An outstanding Montrose, the 1989 is one of the vintage's stars. It possesses an opaque dark ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of minerals, black fruits, cedar, and wood, dense, medium to full-bodied, highly extracted flavors, low acidity, and moderate tannin in the long finish. While it appears to be closing down far more quickly than the legendary 1990, it has layers of sweet fruit as well as an elevated level of glycerin. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring, and drink it over the subsequent 2-3 decades. Last tasted 3/97

Wine Spectator Issue: Web

This is phenomenal and I continue to believe that it is superior to the 1990. Fabulous aromas of roasted fruit, blackberry, tobacco, chocolate and toasted oak. Full and velvety and very, very fresh. Powerful and fabulously structured. This will age for years.--Non-blind Chateau Montrose vertical. Drink now. 22,000 cases made.

Relatively light bottle, no funk, cedar and tobacco dominate. A bit short on fruit intensity and finish.

Wow. This is a classic Montrose drinking beautifully now. Tea, black fruits, and cedar on the palate. Long finish. This has it all. Plenty of life left.

Certainly at it's prime, and ready to go, with probably not too much life left in it. The colour was very deep purple, almost black. On the nose, it had some fruit but had moved well into the cigar and wood notes, with some mint evident as it developed through the evening. The tannins were relaxed and soft, the wine could potentially be accused of being a little light bodied by today's norms, but a traditional and great Bordeaux. Finish was delicate, and not bold.

Purchased in a small wine shop in St. Emilion as a single, in the summer of 2009, opened as the last bottle of the year, ending "to the nines". What a sensational bottle of wine. Opened at 3PM, decanted at 8, served at 9, and the wine kept on coming all night long holding form through midnight. Big, dark, powerful, balanced, deep and long. Dark fruit, spice, leather and a real sense of deep gravel and old vines of St Estephe. A fantastic 20 year old Bordeaux wine and a superb finish to 2009. Happy New Year!
