As prodigious as the 1990 is, the 1989 seems to typify so many of the Medoc first-growths in this vintage - excellent, but undistinguished for its reputation. The wine possesses a leathery, oaky nose, medium body, and good ripeness, but next to the 1990, the 1989 is dwarfed by that wine's richness, intensity, and length. The tannins come across as more elevated, as well as slightly greener and tougher. The 1989 may put on more weight and come together, much like the 1985 did after 4-6 years in the bottle, but for now, this wine seems to follow the pattern of many 1989 Medoc first-growths, revealing an unexciting level of quality. Give it 5-6 more years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20.

Round and velvety wine, with lovely blackberry and raspberry characer. Full-bodied, with lovely tannins and a long finish. Still tight. Not as big as I remember, but excellent. I have always loved this wine. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal.

Youthful in appearance, opaque, ruby red with no signs of browning and very little core to rim variation. The nose is a mix of primary and tertiary characteristics, cassis, prune, dried roses, extremely perfumed, dried herbs, tobacco, forest floor. The palate is super complex, layer upon of layers of flavor. Dark berry fruit, cassis, blackberries and blueberries, velvety in texture, the fruit is sweet and super refined, silky smooth tannin and in complete balance with the acidity. The flavors linger for what seem like forever! I have never come across a wine that delivers such finesse and grace. Absolutely Spectacular.

colour: mature with a garnet core nose: mature claret. red berries. dust. a little frayed at the edges. taste: red fruits and a little dusty. this tasted like it had a final burst of red fruit and then faded a little. this is just past its peak and should be drunk now and over the next 4-5 years. It is however a fine old claret and is still enjoyable.

Very Nice: Bouquet of roses and cassis. Medium bodied ripe red fruit and sweet tannins on the palate. Medium finish. This is drinking at its peak.
