Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 129

The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-colored 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavors than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years.

Consistent notes except for cont'd softening of tannins with age; Med dark ruby w/amber edge; impressive nose; not too tannic; lovely Cabernet fruit; med.-full body; beautifully balanced, very ripe, almost sweet fruit; some of the leaness (esp. mid=palate) & hardness of the vintage but not austere, esp. for a Latour; long, complex, intense & elegant. Ready now but with plenty of life ahead.

Very light, great flavor, subtle - went great with the lamb chops.

1988 is largely forgotten because of the stature of the 1989 and 1990 vintages that followed. Regardless, 1988 was a very good vintage and in 2003 well-selected 1988s offer very good bang for the buck in aged classified growth Bordeaux. The '88 Latour has always been a good wine but it has never elicited any wows from people when it has been opened around me. Dark colored at the core turning light garnet at the rim. A very big. herbal nose of chocolate and mature cassis and cherry. High toned in the mouth with light coffee and decayed, simple fruit flavors. Moderate length.
