The 1987s do not have the weight, richness, and multi-dimensional character of his 1984s, 1985s, and 1986s. But do not expect them to gather much dust on retailers' shelves. The 1987 Alexander Valley exhibits a big, dramatic, spicy, oaky, smoky nose that is also intermingled with aromas of herbs and black fruits. It offers a big, generous, supple mouthful of Cabernet fruit bolstered by adequate acidity. It is framed nicely by the vanillin notes of American oak. This is an elegant, smooth and forward Cabernet for drinking over the next 7-8 years.
