Initially, the nose was quite elegant and almost exuberantly spicy but after 30 minutes of air strong secondary aromas began to emerge bringing pungent earth, leather and hints of sous bois to the party. The flavors are delicious and still firmly structured, particularly so relative to the density of the mid-palate. In short, this somewhat disappointing as the flavors and finish don't deliver on the exceptional promise of the nose though there is still plenty of life here. As with the '86 before it, this would be best served with food. Tasted several times recently with consistent notes.

Very firm and tight, but spicy plum, cinnamon, currant and other fruit flavors emerge from the tart, somewhat tannic package. Not a big wine, but it needs until 1994 to '96 at the earliest to show what it has.
