Jancis Robinson Author: Jancis Robinson

Very tight and unyielding. Mineral with a slightly dry end. Still very taut. I would wait awhile for this.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker

A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. It is beginning to budge from its infantile stage and approach adolescence. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050. Last tasted, 12/02.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

Racy and powerful. Black color. Currants, tar and dried herbs. Full-bodied, with firm tannins. Slightly hollow center palate--a bit of a letdown. Better with more bottle age.--Bordeaux retrospective.

Bright ,opaque ruby colour with no evolution showing, on the nose it has intense perfume, so intense that u can feel its impact from a decanter  6 feet away....mushroom, forest floor, truffle....on the plate   Medium body, the tannin is there but dissipates quickly,  many layers of complexity and red and  black berry fruit flavors, smooth and elegant, feminine and bold. Medium finish but the wine tastes rich and elegant.... Decant for three hours minimum.

Initially still tannic on opening and muted. However opens up nicely after a while in glass. Good balance with gradually smoothing tannins. Decent fruit notes but very feminine and elegant. Not a blockbuster but simply pleasant and comforting. 50+8+8+19+9=94

Auction purchase a month ago. Opened two hours before serving. We did not decant. It was a 3 hour wine in the glass, you just did not want to see it disappear, the aromas were mind-blowing, like walking deeper and deeper into a garden of a thousand violets on a pine needle bed just turned. Great fruit, long long long long. Such balance, even as it gained strength. Easily another 10-15 years or more left in this vintage. Gorgeous. The Chateau rates this a 5-star vintage, and it's easy to see why. Nearly as captivating as the 1983, more power than elegance in comparison. Makes me certain to wait on the 1995 and 2000 vintages -- so much to look forward to in the biggest years from this First Growth. Any 1986 special anniversaries will be perfectly recognized with this Margaux!
