This is one of my favorite vintages of Las Cases for present day consumption. The wine reveals a youthful deep ruby/purple color, followed by a classic Las Cases bouquet of pain grille, lead pencil, minerals, and ripe black currants. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding concentration, and soft tannin, this is a classic, fleshy 1985 that reveals none of the potential dilution noticeable in many wines from this vintage. At one time I thought this might turn out to be a modern day clone of the 1953, but it possesses a lot more flesh and intensity.

A fabulous wine; one of the first great Las Cases. Full-bodied and rich, with the tannins extremely well integrated into an impressive background of fruit. Give it time.--Cabernet Challenge.

This was an excellent Leoville Las Cases, all classical Leoville as expected. However, my expectations were higher because in several articles I saw it described as the best (the emphasized) Bordeaux from the 80s and it was not that. Perhaps, not a great bottle so need to try again.

Sampled at Les Millésimes du siecle, Le Grand Tasting, Paris. Young! Deep blue, very slight edge color change. Classic depth of aromatics, in equal measure of cedar, tobacco, floral fragrances, and dark fruit. Full bodied and mouth-filling. Integrated. Elegant. Precise. Delicious. Great length. Tannins fully resolved and everything in balance. While it does not quite reach the standard of perfection set by its younger brother from 2000, it is a pleasure to drink this mature St. Julien now and for the next 10 years. A wine that reinforces the pedigree of this chateau, and helps one to be patient with younger vintages which, while compelling now, will also become even more precious when they are as integrated as this 23 year old Second Growth Bordeaux. Wine presented by Yorick d'Alton of Famille Delon, long time ambassador for the chateau.
