International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 103

($85-$109) Red-ruby. Ripe aromas of plum, currant, lead pencil and milk chocolate. Sweet but penetrating and gripping, with lovely clarity of flavor and terrific thrust. Classic claret, with lovely fruit and a very long, ripely tannic finish. A compelling example from this very elegantly styled vintage.

Very, very full and rich and round. Anthony Barton loves it – the first wine he made in the post-Uncle Ronald era. Lovely now.

Bordeaux Book(1998) Author: Robert Parker

Anthony Barton's 1985 may turn out to be a remake of the chateau's splendid 1953. Deep ruby/garnet with a complex, complete, and intense bouquet of sweet, superripe, curranty fruit, minerals, cedar, spice, and baked herbs, this medium-bodied wine has exceptional balance, fine length, gobs of fruit, and soft tannin in the velvety finish. This classic claret is a joy to drink. Last tasted, 9/97.

Wine Spectator Author: James Laube

An austere wine that's a touch earthy with a slightly metallic edge and meager fruit. May be in a dumb stage and could grow out of it surprisingly well. Firm and tight, but starts to open up on the finish.--Cabernet Challenge.

Excellent. Drinking very well now if you enjoy mature wines. Cedar truffle smell. Royal red fruit. Tannins resolved.

Drank a lot better than I thought it would but it's definitely on its last legs as it aged noticeably after sitting in the glass for 30 minutes. Noted saddle leather, strawberry, and spice but lacked a balanced acidity to really carry it through. Tannins had aged gracefully though and the finish, while not long, was pleasant. Drink now, if it's not already a tad late.

Nearly as saturated in color as the ?82, this underdog vintage outshines its more expensive ?82 sibling from the get go. The nose offered up from the ?85 was nearly haunting, tantamount to sitting in a cigar lounge full of smoky leather, humidor, espresso and black currant notes. Richer, denser and more layered in the mouth than the ?82, stretching its legs w/ ease to an outstanding conclusion
