Bordeaux Book(1998) Author: Robert Parker

This has always been one of the more seductive, savory, complex Haut-Brions of the eighties. My notes have always suggested that it is the quintessentially elegant, finesse-styled Haut-Brion. The color remains a deep ruby/purple with slight lightening at the edge. The knock-out nose of intense jammy black fruits, smoke, cedar, herbs, and new oak is followed by a generously concentrated, rich, gorgeously proportioned and layered Haut-Brion with no hard edges. Everything - alcohol, acidity, tannin - is beautifully integrated into the seamless personality of the 1985.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

Back on form with the '85 after a slightly less-grand '83, this is a gorgeous, harmonious wine. Beautiful ripe fruit and tobacco aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and velvety with a fine rich finish. --The Bordeaux 50.

Opened for 2.5 hours before tasting. Nose of earth, grass, cabinet and black fruits. Palate of cabinet, earth and tobacco. Medium body and length. Elegant.

Haut Brion tasting in Rochester, NY with J. P. Delmas. The 1985 is at its peak. A balanced, refined and noble wine that has mellowed but maintains a full bodied flavor but yet is so very refined. The typical Haut Brion characteristics are present - tobacco, leather and earth.
