International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 103

($175-$200) Deep red. Multidimensional nose melds red berry liqueur, milk chocolate, underbrush, truffle and smoke; seemed to shut down in the glass. Lush, silky and sweet, with sneaky ripe acidity giving the flavors clarity and penetration. Still a bit youthfully tight on the back end, but vinous and long.

Extremely deep colour. Similar still-crimson hue to the 1990 but even deeper. Less heavy than the 1990 with more obvious acidity – that streak of refreshman that can be excessive in mnay 1985s now serves this rich style of wine particularly well. Less opulent than the 1990 but a more complete, slightly better balanced wine. Wonderfuly sleek with a beginning, middle and end to the tasting experience.

Tasted 8 Times Since Bottling With Inconsistent Notes L'Evangile's 1985 remains relatively unevolved and youthful. The dark ruby color exhibits no signs of age, and the hugely complex, multi-dimensional bouquet of blackcurrants, raspberries, exotic spices and oak requires coaxing from the glass. Rich, medium to full-bodied, super-concentrated, well-balanced, and tannic, this wine continues to evolve more slowly than other 1985s.

Rich yet elegant with very deep, concentrated black currant and herb flavors and smoky tannins; long-term potential.

Great color - dark translucent red with only slight lightening at the rim. Intense aromatics of leather, cherry, mint, and sandalwood. Light tannins and integrated acidity. Good length. The wine still has quite a bit of fruit but texturally I expect more elegance from L'Evangile in general and certainly 20 years after harvest. Drink now.
