Taylor is always closed and tight when young and this is no exception. Deep ruby-purple, ripe raisin and violet aromas, full-bodied, with sweet raisin and grape flavors, a lovely balance of full tannins and an explosion of fruit on the finish.

For The Love of Port | 88

Medium dark strawberry color with pink edge. Scent of spice, cinnamon and pomegranate. Never one of my favorites, this 1983 is a solid bottle nonetheless and shows ripe red fruits with some primary plum and raspberry. Medium in weight, there is solid balance but it then heads towards a simple mid-palate, lacking the true exemplary depth of Taylor Vintage Ports. Drink now through 2018.

Buying Guide - 2nd Edition (1989) | 94

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1983 is wonderfully aromatic and so perfumed (a characteristic of this charming vintage), yet powerful, long and deep on the palate.

Pale ruby. Developed, complex aromas of red and black fruit, earth, and spices. Fully mature, tannins barely perceptible, seemingly endless length. A great bottle of port.
