($125) Full, deep red. Reticent aromas of plum, currant, mint and cedar. Dry, penetrating and stylish, with very primary flavors and noteworthy vinosity. Classic claret intensity and grip without any excess weight. The flavors build impressively on the firmly tannic, youthfully tough finish. This bottle was still a few years away from full maturity and should last for another 20 years.

(magnum) Deep ruby. Big and bold and thick. Dense and lively. Very rich with some liquorice notes. More lift than the 1990. Sweet and gorgeous. Haunting and long yet still very refreshing. No variation between two magnums opened several hours apart with the one given several hours in a decanter definitely superior. Xavier Borie: 'This was the earliest picked ever and was an enormous crop. Henri Martin sent samples to Paris because the authorities wanted to limit yields to 60 hl/ha. In the end we were granted a special licence to make 70 hl/ha. Lovely and lively - absolute vindication of the lack of correlation between yield and quality.

One of the greatest Grand-Puy-Lacostes ever produced, the 1982 still possesses a youthful, dense opaque purple color with slight lightening at the edge. The nose remains somewhat monolithic, but an intense black currant/creme de cassis-scented bouquet is backed up by roasted earth, smoke, and mineral notes.
Full-bodied, muscular, and powerful, this opulently-textured, moderately tannic, youthful, huge Grand-Puy-Lacoste will benefit from another 2-5 years of cellaring. However, the wine's sweetness and low acidity provide plenty of joy at present. It will age well for at least another 25 years.
