International Wine Cellar Author: Ian D'Agata Issue: Issue 10098

4.8 g/l total acidity; 12.7% alcohol): Dark ruby with a hint of garnet. Enticing aromas of dark plum, cassis, truffle, cedar and coffee. Rich, dense and suave, with ripe, rich flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes with a touch of alcoholic warmth and hints of underbrush, lead pencil and tobacco. The tannins are big and plush, but the wine nonetheless finishes with the classic, slightly austere mouthfeel typical of the 1981 vintage. I've always felt that this 1981 was a major success for Lynch-Bages and this bottle bears this out once again.

Mature. Mineral, Stoney, black-red fruit. Dusty, aged graphite and leather aromas. Strong intense fruit left. Great balance and aromas left.

Lynch Bages é um dos meus vinhos favoritos. Do Rodrigo tbém, apesar de sua paixão pelo Rauzan Segla. Ele foi 90 pontos da WS e recebeu o seguinte comentário do Parker: "After a period in the late seventies where Lynch-Bages seemed to be taking suppleness in winemaking too far, I detected with the 1981 a partial return to the very rich, robust, ripe, huge extract style of the great Lynch-Bages wines like the 1970, 1962, and 1961. Certainly the monumental 1982 and excellent 1983 will eclipse the 1981 in stature, but this wine is quite good, and the best Lynch-Bages since 1975. Very dark ruby, with a strong, aggressive bouquet of black currants, cedar, and new oak, this ripe wine has surprising density on the palate, with plenty of tannin. The 1981 shows lots of gutsy character."

Deep ruby color with slight bricking on the edge. Intense earthy nose with notes of leather, mushroom and cassis. A fair amount of fruit left, becoming more apparent over the next hour. Perfectly balanced and velvety on palate with soft, mature tannins and just enough acidity. Lingering finish of tobacco that makes me smile. I have to say this '81 (patchy vintage) is aged to perfection!
