Reviews For This Wine

Jancis Robinson | 17.5

Nearing the end of its active life but this is one of the best 1981s I have tasted from anywhere, still vibrant in 2009.  Fully developed ruby and only medium bodied but with lovely elegance and harmony. Lighter than the Pomerol norm with some dustiness but no shortage of fruit.

In a vintage that produced so many austere, spartan-styled wines, Certan de May turned out one of the vintage's stars. The wine has retained a vigor and youthfulness that makes me believe it will be one of the longer-lived examples of the vintage. The color remains a healthy dark ruby with no lightening at the edge. A reticent aroma offers mineral, black cherry, earthy, and spice notes. On the palate, the wine is powerful and rich, somewhat austere, yet remarkably layered, thick Pomerol that is atypical for the vintage. The wine can be drunk now, but it requires another 1-3 years of bottle age.

Ties for first place in this vintage. A blockbuster, yet harmonious. Great dark color with layers of chocolate, olive, berry flavor. Full bodied and tannic but very velvety.

About This Producer

Chateau Certan-de-May is situated on the plateau of Pomerol on the right bank of the Gironde Estuary. Its neighbors include Vieux-Chateaux Certan, Petrus, and Le Pin. The chateau's name comes from a Scottish family who settled in Pomerol during the 17th century. The estate produces about 2,000 cases a year from clay soil and gravel-covered vineyards. The wine's blend is made of 70% Merlot and the rest consists of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 1974, the property has been run by Mme. Bareau-Bader and her son. The style of the wine is very big and concentrated, which stems from its vinification process. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by up to a month's maceration before aging in new oak barrels. The best vintages of Chateau Certan-de-May can age for more than twenty years.
