Very evolved ruby with brick at the rim. Gentle, low key, hint of licorice. Neat, very sweet, dense and compact. Lots of pleasure to come. Taut. Tannins definitely on the finish.

Once a little rough, the '80 Taylor has mellowed. Deep ruby, with cherry and berry aromas, full-bodied, with lots of fruit flavors and hard tannins. Very angular.

Possibly the most youthful showing of the 1980 Taylor I’ve experienced with a deep, rich burgundy color. Structurally impressive with all the characters set in place, this ’80 earns plenty of style points. A simple and sweet approach with cherry berry fruit, spice and a gentle spirituous quality. The tannins are still lively and drying. Bigger than I remember and a fine medium length. It will probably never drink better than today yet this will hold for another 15+ years.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1980 is probably the best port of the vintage.
