A truly magnificent magnum. Very sweet, rich and glorious (a word I see I wrote twice). Long, subtle and hugely enjoyable. Racy, mineral with strong graphite notes. Round and so friendly.

Well-kept bottles of this wine have been fully mature for 20-25 years but show no signs of decline, one of the magical aspects of great vintages of profound Bordeaux wines. Showing considerable amber to the garnet color, this wine shows an exotic nose of licorice, sweet, jammy red and black fruits, spice box, and cedar. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied, lush, and fleshy, with plenty of glycerin and a very soft, tactile impression. The wine should be drunk up unless readers have access to pristinely stored, larger format bottles such as magnums, double magnums, etc. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 12/02.

We had two bottles of this vintage. One, recently recorked in California, was rich but clumsy, with an odd earthy/tart contrast; Serena Sutcliffe, who was leading the tasting, suspected adulteration. The other bottle was fantastic, a beautiful expression of this rich, ripe vintage, velvety with plum, prune and meaty flavors, balanced and long. It can hold for another decade.--Cheval-Blanc vertical.
