Producer Notes

Château Angelus is located just west of the town of St. Emilion and run by cousins Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and Jean-Bernard Grenié. The property was promoted to Prémier Grand Cru Classé status in 1996. Typical blends consist of Merlot and Cabernet Franc which are grown on Angelus's southerly-exposed vineyards. Dark ruby, medium to full body, raspberry ganache, black fruits, and a hint of sweet oak and spice on the medium long finish. Excellent, but will be better in 5 to 10 years.

Since the mid eighties, this winery has been a consistent very high-level performer. I have always been pleased that I was lucky enough to purchase a case each of the 88, 89, and 90 on futures. The 2000 more than maintains this chateau?s reputation but I do not believe it is the equivalent of their efforts in 89, 90, and 95 and is only slightly better than the 1998. Very thick dark red black color with thick heavily pigmented legs. Strong aromas of pine, new oak, dark fruits, mint, and spice. Nice crisp apple-y acidity with heavy tannins on the palate. Despite the magnitude of the acid and tannins, the wine remains in balance. A keeper with plenty of potential. This wine needs time.
