Producer Notes
Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Château Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estèphe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. Side by side 1990 Leoville Barton and Cos At 1 hour Barton very closed, darker in color, nice bright fruits and green on the nose Cos more approachable, smoky, but in need of more time At 90 minutes Both ready to approach, 2 hours probably optimal At 2 hours The Cos is a lighter version of the 82, smoky and elegant but without the power The Barton could still use more time but is the superior wine. While the tannens are still very present on the back end ( this wine has a long life ahead of it) it is elegant, bright and young. Not exhibiting the complexity we have seen in some of the 82s but a comparable wine At 3 hours with food The Cos almost closes the gap, smooth, smoky and delicious, but not powerful. The Cos is probably at its peak now. The Barton is more fruit forward and has the edge. This wine is not close to its peak. The tannins are strong on the finish, but not unpleasant. We guess another 5 years to peak and a long life beyond. The Barton just gets better with time. Peaking at 4 hours
